Generali Ladies Linz - Quarter Finals

Johanna Larsson (Sweden) v Victorija Golubic (Switzerland)

Linz is a lovely city and I was lucky enough to visit this summer. Highlighted by the Danube and interesting architecture, it is filled with interesting places to visit and delightful people. When I saw this competition was live on a Friday, I never even looked at anything else.

On an indoor charcoal court, the bounce seemed a little slow to me.

This looked to be a close match, Larsson was ranked 89 and Golubic 117, they had never previously played each other.

Golubic started the strongest as Golubic picked up an early break to lead 2-0. Larsson broke back later in the set to get back to 4-3 but then Golubic again broke to lead 5-3 and then held to win the set 6-3 with some eye-ctching, flair winners on show.

The second set started with an immediate break for Golubic followed soon after by an injury time out for Larsson. It was some kind of leg injury and Larsson was just never the same after this despite gamely continuing.

Golubic got a double break to lead 3-0 as Larsson was all over the place. Larsson did pick up a surprising break as Golubic made a string of errors and even ran out of challenges. But Golubic broke straight back and went on to win 6-3, 6-1 as Larsson fizzled out.
